I Tested SeaSickness Hacks So You Didn't Have To...

Seasickness

It causes a lot of stress and anxiety for first-time cruisers and veterans alike.

First, you get all clammy. Your body heats up as you begin to sweat a little bit. The dizziness sets in.

I hate it. Dread it, run from it, destiny arrives all the same.

…and by destiny, I mean throwing up on the Lido Deck after maxing out the drink package (I’m just kidding).

But the purpose of this post is to help 3 people

  1. People that are afraid to get seasick and want to take some preventative approaches before they set sail.

  2. People that are on a cruise and starting to feel seasick and want to stop the feeling before you blow confetti all over the bathroom walls. (Confetti is the code word for puke. 🤢 )

  3. And the last tip is for people that have unfortunately popped your piñata all over promenade (say that 3x fast) … and you need something to get you back on track.

So let’s dive in…

Ahoy Sailors, welcome to another day in Paradise my name is Griff and I want you to have an excellent vacation. And in order to do that, I need to tell y’all a story.

While sailing on the Carnival Paradise... Alyssa and I decided to go to a show. Now we had just finished dessert. I had 3 chocolate tres leches. They’re so good you gotta try them. But this show was not any type of show, a show that required audience participation … the Love & Marriage Gameshow. And with our luck being the youngest newlywed couple we were called on stage.

First of all, if you’re prone to motion sickness, try to go easy on the sugar… also book a cabin in the middle of the ship, definitely not the front (there are your bonus tips)

But the show took place at the theatre which was at the front of the ship. Once we got on stage I immediately started feeling seasick. I started getting hot, I get that Clammy neck, I started to sweat, and immediately ran off the stage to find the nearest men’s room.

Yep…it was pretty embarrassing, but after stepping out a friend who watched the show gave me some prescribed medicine for motion sickness. She said it helped with her pregnancy and strongly recommended it. That’s right I took pills from a pregnant lady.

Now, I don’t recommend taking other people’s medicine. And say what you want, but the relief came almost immediately.

So if you think you’ll get seasick team… go to your family physician and get a prescription for some motion sickness pills (or a patch) that way you’ll be ready in case something happens.

Small tip: First of all - don’t feel embarrassed man, I get it, it happens to everyone, it happened to me and I’ve been on 30 plus cruises so if you ever feel seasick or you threw up or something  (just ask a crew member to help you) they’ll be happy to help. These things do happen…

Margaritaville At Sea Paradise Christening Event

I was recently on the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise for their Christening Ceremony. And while sailing I started feeling seasick so in an effort not to spill my guts I doubled down on these next two tips.

Step one: Sea Bands. These use acupuncture to help pin pressure points on your wrists.

Sea-Band Anti-Nausea Acupressure Wristband for Motion or Morning Sickness, Adult, 1 Pair (Color May Vary)

Sea-Bands are knitted elasticated wristband that works because of a plastic knob sewn into the side of the inside of the wristband which exerts pressure and stimulates the P6, or Nei-Kuan, acupressure point. It was been proven that pressure on this point relieves nausea and vomiting.

Step two, I went to the bar to get a real ginger beer. Remember, avoid sugary drinks. Some of the old ginger ale is fake ginger-like mixes. That just makes things worse. What you want is the real thing, guys. Find a specialty bar with fresh ginger or find some ginger tea, or pack some ginger chews. I promise you the effects of feeling seasick started to subside.

Combining these two together had me back to 100% dancing with my friends and having fun. It’s my number one hack I use to prevent getting seasick.

Again, Ginger Beer (Do not underestimate this)

  • It Looks cool,

  • You can still join the party and people don’t ask “why aren’t you drinking” I opted to add a little bit of lime and sour mix to get that extra Vitamin C, but to each their own. My point is:

Between prescription medicine (or patches), ginger beer, and sea bands, you can prevent getting seasick with ease.

But if that doesn’t work…

You can always use rum.

Peace ✌🏽
